RESIDENTIAL SCHEMES

At Ohel Sarah children are not put in a home: They are given a home.

We operate 5 residential projects, which caters for a total of 53 residents. Our residential program is divided between residential housing for those with mild to moderate needs, and sheltered housing for those with severe disabilities.

Ohel Sarah bears sole responsibility for all its residents and among other things is expected to provide them with food, clothing and medical care. Once a child joins the Ohel Sarah family we assume responsibility for them for the rest of their lives. We are their friends, their family and their home, and are open all year round.

This program comprises of four different homes, each of which is located in an apartment within a mainstream residential block. The reason for this is to help our students integrate into the community, and to be able to live amongst other people.

Each home has its own 'house mother' who is there to see them off in the morning and to greet them in the afternoon when they come back from the employment center. Afternoons and evening are filled with diverse and stimulating activities such as computers, music, dancing, physiotherapy, swimming, cooking and baking.

As in a regular home, residents are given duties, and are responsible for household chores and keeping the place tidy. They are taught to master daily living skills and to care for their immediate needs, and to be aware of the needs of others.

The homes are modern and attractive, and are planned for the specific needs of the residents. The comfortable atmosphere and companionship gives residents a shared sense of belonging and ownership, yet at the same time we support their independency and encourage them to keep up with their parents and family, through inviting them to the home or going to them for a visit.

Residents in the sheltered unit have extreme needs, with many suffering from autism and/or developmental disabilities and behavioral disorders. They need round the clock comprehensive care, with many requiring a personal carer.

In spite of their handicaps and challenges Ohel Sarah extend to these children dignity and respect. During the day they take part in Ohel Sarah's employment and rehabilitation programs. In the afternoons and evenings they enjoy activities such as horseback riding, swimming, and arts and crafts.
